More on the Destroilet

It turned out the Destroilet was, in fact, put into production.

Another person's reminiscences:

And as recently as 2005, someone was looking for a replacement for his old Destroilet. Apparently it was still working, but he had to replace parts, including his squirrel cage(!)

And, the Pièce de résistance, a band which calls itself "Destroilet", which you can check out on youtube.

  1. Very funny -- I lived (happily) with a Destroilet through the 90s, and found your post through the "the world was turning" blog. You mentioned the Kountry Life guy who still used one in 2005 and had a user's manual -- I checked it out and whatddya know, it was my ex-husband, still living out in the woods off the grid in Vermont, and still keeping our Destroilet running. From the looks of the comments on HIS post, seems he could do a good business making copies of our coveted owner's manual.

We had wealthy relatives from Scarsdale who loved spending a weekend in the country with us - we caught them trying to photograph the burner flaming one time, which is exactly the same as trying to photograph the inside of the refrigerator after the light goes out. The burner is activated by the seat going down!
    Love your blog!
